One of the things I tell clients when we first sit down for a session is that therapy is a partnership. I'm not the expert of you. You are the expert of you. We walk together, alongside each other, in this journey. I certainly don't have all the answers. I'm on my own journey, too, and I sometimes need someone to walk with me as well. What I can help with is holding up a mirror, providing tools, and offering empathy and compassion.
Sometimes we need another person to help us see the patterns of behavior in our own lives that are no longer working for us. Someone who can help us to illuminate narratives we might be carrying around from the past--narratives that might no longer apply. We might also need someone with a more objective perspective, who isn't living inside our own brain all day, to offer some solutions and help us with implementing them.
But sometimes what we need most of all is empathy and compassion. Maybe we've been walking through life self-flagellating, thinking that we can punish and criticize ourselves into changing. Contrary to popular belief, constantly beating ourselves up doesn't help us when we're trying to change. So I can sit with you and help you to see yourself a bit differently--offer an empathetic ear and a compassionate stance, and in doing so, help you to see yourself in a kinder and gentler way. When you shift your perspective of yourself, magic happens.
There's no fixed definition of what therapy is. It's what you want it to be, and I'm here to help you figure out what that looks like. Let's work together to craft a process that works for you so you can navigate challenges effectively, develop greater self awareness, and connect more deeply with yourself and others.
